Doukhobors end fasting Saturday, July 23, 1983 Two Doukhobor women on a self-imposed protest fast in the federal Women's Prison at Kingston have begun eating again. Dennis Curtis, information officer for the Corrections Services of Canada, said both women began eating Thursday night. Mary Braun, 63, is serving a four-year sentence for arson. She was convicted last March. Tina Zmaeff, 59, was sentenced in 1979 to eight years and 11 months for arson. The two women have been fasting for about three weeks. Mrs. Braun was being fed by tube through her nose into her stomach, which she had not attempted to remove. Despite the tube, she swallowed half a banana Thursday night. The tube was removed yesterday. Mrs. Zmaeff was not considered in danger yet, so was not being force fed. |
