Doukhobor on prison fast in hospital

Thursday, October 27, 1983

Vancouver BC -- VANCOUVER (CP) - Hunger striker Mary Astaforoff has been taken from a Fraser Valley prison to Vancouver General Hospital.

The 68-year-old Sons of Freedom Doukhobor woman was reported in stable condition. Medical authorities would not comment on the reason for her transfer from the Regional Psychiatric Centre at Matsqui.

Correctional service spokesman Thomas d'Aquino said Mrs. Astaforoff allowed doctors to examine her Tuesday and they decided she should be transferred to hospital. Mrs. Astaforoff, serving three years for arson, was force-fed last month by a Victoria doctor. But Mr. d'Aquino said he believes the only nourishment she has had since Sept. 25 has been some herb tea.
