3 Sons of Freedom in prison for arson are stable on fasts Saturday, October 19, 1985 CASTLEGAR, B.C. -- Special to The Globe and Mail CASTLEGAR, B.C. Three imprisoned members of the Sons of Freedom sect who underwent prolonged fasts in prison before being granted early releases in 1983 by former solicitor- general Robert Kaplan have been refusing to eat for almost two weeks. Mary Astaforoff, 72, is serving 10 years for burning buildings at the Doukhobor Museum near here in September. Mary Braun, 53, and Tina Jmaieff, 63, set fire to a home near Grand Forks, B. C., last spring and are serving eight years. Esther McMullan, deputy director of the Lakeside Correctional Centre in Burnaby, B. C., said the women have been in stable condition since beginning their fast on Oct. 8. |
