VANCOUVER (CP) - Mary Braun, a Sons of Freedom Doukhobor, was described as being in weak condition Monday as she continued her hunger strike and refused medical treatment. The 63-year-old woman, who is refusing food to protest a seven-year jail term for arson, today entered the 57th day of her fast. She is in Vancouver General Hospital where she was taken from the Matsqui Regional Correctional Centre. Matsqui spokesman Tony D'Aquino said Braun is "still very dehydrated, weak and refusing medical attention, but she is alert and competent." Another Freedomite hunger striker, Mary Astaforoff, died Sunday after fasting for 59 days. Astaforoff was serving a 10-year sentence for arson. Tina Zmaeff, 59, who was convicted along with Braun, is in the prison's hospital on hunger strike. D'Aquino said Zmaeff is "weak, but in better shape (than Braun), maybe because she is younger." |
