Mr. D'[Aquino] said Tina Zmaeff, 61, who, with 65-year-old Mary Braun, ended her first hunger strike on Dec. 2, made a telephone call to the Kootenays Sunday before resuming her fast. ''We are not sure what the call was about, but we think it was to family members to notify them she was resuming her fast,'' he said. |

Doukhobor resumes hunger strike Tuesday, December 10, 1985 Vancouver BC -- Canadian Press VANCOUVER One of two Sons of Freedom women who fasted for 57 days to protest against seven-year jail sentences has resumed her hunger strike, prison spokesman Tom D'Aquino said yesterday. Mr. D'Aquino said Tina Zmaeff, 61, who, with 65-year-old Mary Braun, ended her first hunger strike on Dec. 2, made a telephone call to the Kootenays Sunday before resuming her fast. ''We are not sure what the call was about, but we think it was to family members to notify them she was resuming her fast,'' he said. So far, Mrs. Braun has not resumed the strike. Mrs. Braun and Mrs. Zmaeff went to jail on Oct. 7 for burning a house in Gilpin, near Grand Forks. The initial hunger strike ended after family members visited Mrs. Zmaeff in Matsqui Regional Correctional Centre and Mrs. Braun in Vancouver General Hospital, where she was taken when her condition became worse. Mrs. Braun was subsequently returned to Matsqui. Another Sons of Freedom member, Mary Astaforoff, 71, died on Nov. 24 while on a hunger strike. She was serving a 10-year sentence for burning four public buildings at the Doukhobor Museum in Castlegar. |
