ACROSS CANADA Doukhobor women set a second fire in prison

00:00 EST Wednesday, January 08, 1986

Two Sons of Freedom Doukhobors have set the second fire in their prison cell since the death on Nov. 24 of Freedomite hunger striker Mary Astaforoff. Mary Braun, 65, and Tina Jmaieff, 61, are serving eight-year sentences for arson. They set fire to bedding and bedclothes at the Matsqui federal prison on Dec. 22 and again on Sunday. Thomas D'Aquino, a spokesman for Correctional Service Canada, said both fires were set to protest against the death of Mrs. Astaforoff. A fire had also been set several days before she died. Meanwhile, a committee of all Doukhobor groups has been working on the concept of a halfway house to bring the women out of prison and closer to their home community, but a spokesman said the prison fires are a setback.
