Doukhobor fasters to be freed from jail

00:00 EST Friday, March 28, 1986

Two Sons of Freedom Doukhobors have broken their fast on the 47th day, after pleas from the West Kootenays' Doukhobor community, which was growing tense at the prospect of their deaths.

Tina Jmaieff, 61, who had been transferred from the Matsqui Federal Penitentiary in Abbotsford to the Mission Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, was returned to the prison late yesterday. Mrs. Jmaieff and Mary Braun, 65, are serving eight- year sentences for arson.

Hunger striker Mary Astaforoff died in November while in custody. The National Parole Board denied Mrs. Jmaieff and Mrs. Braun parole on Tuesday, and at least one member of the Sons of Freedom had threatened to break the law in order to join the fasting women in prison.
