June Venutti photo

One of my early memories was that of these guys, with their horses, helping Dad dig out a basement under our home in the mid 50's.
They used a huge scoop shovel with chains attached to the horse and dragged the earth out, onto the back yard.
There was probably no other way except by hand.

Before the days of recycling and even garbage trucks, Revelstoke had garbage pick-up.
Most will remember John Venutti, pictured above with his horses and his son Mollo.
It was with these horses and a sleigh that our garbage was hauled down to the edge of the Columbia and dumped.
I can remember playing along the river bank, kicking cans and throwing garbage into the current watching it get pulled under.
This was when the Columbia was mighty and it was scary as a child to be near it.

I don't remember the following incident but I have talked to others who do;
one cold winter day when the snow was unsually deep, John was collecting the garbage along the
alley beside our home and the sleigh got stuck. Apparently after many failed attempts to get the horses
moving, one of them dropped dead of a heart attack.
It was known the horses were always well cared for so folks concluded the horse was ill.

The winter of 1959 was the last winter the horses worked in the snow.
Those days are gone but the memory of our folks announcing the arrival of Venutti's horses
is still here. We would run out to see the animals slogging along the lane with steam rising from them.
Anyone remember the horses names?

Suggestions thus far: Nellie or Nell, King, Snoose, &/or Bill.

Mt. Begbie in background!

Venutti's barn taken not too long before it burned down.
Same barn as seen in previous 1960 photo but from other side.
They kept the horses behind the doors, on the left facing the street and the
wagons and sleds were stored down the alley to the right behind locked doors.
There was just enough room to crawl under those doors when we were very young.

The melting snow on the streets making way for marbles (steelies, cats-eyes),
skipping (pepper, easy ivy over), tag & freeze tag, hide 'n seek, hop-scotch, etc.
1 potatoe, 2 potatoe, 3 potatoe 4, 5 potatoe, 6 potatoe, 7 potatoe, more.

Nice plane Dennis... is there a story there?
The plane was made by Susan's Dad; maybe it was "show & tell" day?

Occasional delays and interruptions filled with boo's and chanting.
Seemed the older we got the further back we sat until we
got to the back row in our 'exploratory years'.
I think the balcony seats are still there but
there is no longer an extra charge to sit in them.
Matinee's could be standing room only, we would FILL the theater.
Velvet curtains.

Was it Nelson Huckle with the flashlight?
then Lynn Switzer?
then Dave Beruschi?

Those of you who grew up in a small town will laugh when you read this
BUT
those of you who didn't may be in disbelief . . . .

You just might be from a small town if :

1. you can name everyone you graduated with.
2. you know what 4-H is.
3. you ever went to parties at a pasture, barn, or at the end of a dirt road.
4. you used to lap "main". (Mainers?)
5. you said the "F" word and your parents knew within the hour
6. you scheduled parties around the the schedule of different police officers, since you know which ones would bust you and which ones wouldn't.
7. you could never buy cigarettes because all the store clerks knew how old you were (and if you were old enough they'd tell your parents anyhow)
8. when you did find somebody old enough and brave enough to buy cigarettes, you still had to go out to the country and drive on back roads to smoke them.
9. it was cool to date somebody from the neighboring town.
10. the whole school went to the same party after graduation
11. you don't give directions by street names or directions by references (turn by Nelson's house, go two blocks east of Anderson's, and it's four houses past the tracks)
12. the golf course had only 9 holes.
13. you can't help but date a friend's ex-boy/girlfriend.
14. your car stays filthy because of the dirt roads and you will never own a dark vehicle for this reason
15. the town next to you is considered "trashy" or "snooty", but is actually just like your town.
16. you referred anyone with a house newer then 1960 as the "rich people"
17. the people in the "big city" dressed funny then you pick up the trend a year later.
18. anyone you want can be found at the local gas station or the local hangout.
19. you see at least one friend a week driving a tractor though town or one of your friends drives a farm truck to school occasionally.
20. the gym teacher suggest you haul hay or go logging for the summer to get stronger.
21. directions are given using the only stop light as a reference.
22. you decide to walk for exercise and 5 people pull over and ask you if you want a ride somewhere.
23. your teachers call you by your older sibling's names.
24. your teachers remember when they taught your parents.
25. you can charge at all the local stores or write cheques without i.d.
26. the closest Mcdonald's is over 100 miles away.
27. the closest mall is over 100 miles away.
28. it is normal to see an old man riding through town on a bike.
29. everyone had the same bootlegger.
30. hot summer days were spent at the local swimming hole.
31. you laugh your ass off reading this because you know it is all true and you tell everyone who lives in your town (because you know them all !!!)
