Good Reading

When I worked in a library, I was always being asked for 'a good book'. It was often hard to recommend the perfect book for each person. But I tried pretty hard. And often kids - or adults - would come back and tell me, "That was perfect. What else should I read?"

Here are some of the places I would look. You may find something you like listed here, too.

S The Spaghetti Book Club is the largest website of kids' books reviewed by kids.

S Every year kids in my neighborhood of Surrey, BC kids pick their favourite books. Here are this
year's nominees, and the list of winners back to 1973. How many of these have you read?

S Check out Kids Reads. More reviews of kids books BY kids, along with contests, polls, etc.

S Check out Lots of Lists, compiled by the University of Calgary.

S Here's a useful list of books that have won awards.

S The Teacher's First website has a list of the Top 100 Books.

S Your own public library will probably offer booklists on their website or at your local branch.
S Here's Publisher's Weekly's list 'All-Time Bestselling Children's Books' - 'hardcovers that have
sold 750,000 copies and paperbacks that have topped the one million copy mark over the years'.
That's a lot of books. Try one or two from this list.

More to come soon...

Contest - New!

Email me a list of your three favourite books, with up to three sentences saying why you like each one. Deadline: September 15, 2008
In your email, also  tell me your name, your age and what school you go to.

I'll publish the list of recommended books here, and send a book prize - and a bag of wine gums - to the person who gives the best reason for liking a book.

And these are a few that I've read lately that I'd happily recommend:

S Kat's Fall by Shelley Shelley Hrdlitschka (for teens)  S Where's My Darling Daughter and One More Sheep by Mij Kelly (picture book) S Johnny Kellock Died Today by Hadley Dyer (for teens)
S
The Third Eye by Mahtab Narsimhan (for teens) S When the Bough Breaks by Irene Watts (for middle grade readers) S Jeffrey and Sloth by Kari-Lynn Winters (picture book)
This is just a start... lots more to come when I've checked the spelling of authors' names, etc.
