Home                   Welcome to Kevins Car Tunes!

Just in case you wondered what I do with my spare time here are some pictures of my 1956 GMC truck. I have been working on this truck on and off for the last couple of years.

Rotten does not truly describe the original cab, basically the bottom 10 inches was replaced all around

First you reduce height by 4 inches! I did not have to section the roof panel either!!

Then you need to cut a windshield to fit. First I used a 5 inch side grinder with cut off wheel to get the original window to fit somewhat closely, then I laid some light cardboard over the glass and made a template that allowed 1/4 inch clearance all around, I then used this template to mark the glass to be cut.

To cut the glass I used a sandblaster. Mask with duct tape, then cut the outside of the glass to the inner plastic layer, turn over and repeat. Make sure to cut evenly all the way across so that stress is relieved in all areas to avoid cracking. Once done blasting just use an exacto blade or razor blade to cut the inner plastic. In the photo on the right you can see a yellowish line, that is how the plastic looks when you sandblast into it. In the left photo I have cut both bottom corners off so the window will lay back. I still have to cut the top off too. 4 bags of sand and counting.

Then you get a cab that looks like this

Front suspension donated by a 1978 Firebird

Then you do something different, like this

and put the new engine in the back like so

Then put the box on to make sure you have room for everything

I dread starting the body work on the box

Then we take the box off and build a suspension system

Add some gussets and sealer and you have a rear mounted engine!

I used air bag struts to makes suspension set up so much easier.

Anyone got a smaller shop?

I might be wasting too much space in this one!

Ok finally some updates on the truck

I got around to installing some taillamps from a 93 caddy

This is the power plant (after being dressed up), 4.6 litre 32 valve northstar, about 650 horsepower @ 9 psi boost.
