Alberta Trip May 2005 - May 28

May 28 we left Saskatchewan Crossing and headed north up the Icefields Parkway.  We stopped at the Athabasca Glacier and walked up to the toe of the glacier.  Anyone who doubts the effects of global warming should visit here to see how much the glacier has receded in recent years, and should note the general lack of snow in the Rockies.  The weather was very warm, and we saw very few animals along the entire drive - probably in the deep woods trying to avoid the heat, especially as most are still carrying their winter coats.

We turned west at Jasper and headed back through B.C. via the Yellowhead Highway.  Before we were even out of the mountains it was, as my maternal grandfather used to say, "as hot as the hinges of hell", and we lost all interest in anything but shade and water.  We camped that night at North Thompson River Provincial Park, where the humidity was about 200%, the mosquitoes were the size of small aircraft and, ironically, there wasn't a breath of wind.
