Work Experience

2006- Senior Program Officer, Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, Government of Canada. Based in Vancouver, I coordinate the federal environmental assessment process for major development projects proposed in British Columbia, working in consultation with federal and provincial agencies, First Nations and the public at large.
2005-06 Policy Analyst, Intergovernmental Affairs, Privy Council Office, Government of Canada. As the analyst responsible for Nunavut and the Yukon, I provided strategic advice to the Prime Minister and Cabinet on territorial priorities and concerns, local social and economic conditions, and the management of federal-territorial relations. I also contributed to the development of federal policies related to territorial devolution, fiscal relations, land claims, resource development, and Arctic sovereignty.
2005 Project Assessment Analyst, Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, Government of Canada. Based in Ottawa, I was part of a team that developed Ministerial advice on the outcomes of environmental assessments for major development projects proposed across the country. I also led the development of an evaluation framework for the Class Screening Program, an Agency initiative that facilitates the assessment of routine projects with predictable effects.
2004 Planning Analyst, Pathways Project, Sustainable Development through Knowledge Integration, Earth Science Sector, Natural Resources Canada, Government of Canada. I developed and managed project case studies that used deliberative technologies and processes to promote the uptake of earth science knowledge in the context of regional planning and policy development in southern British Columbia.
2003-04 Project Coordinator, Clayoquot Alliance for Research, Education and Training, School of Public Administration, University of Victoria. Working with the project directors, I had responsibilities related to budget management ($200K/year), human resource management, meeting facilitation, project communications and outreach.
2003-04 Strategies Component Research Coordinator, Georgia Basin Futures Project, Sustainable Development Research Initiative, Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, University of British Columbia. I was responsible for the direction of strategies component research activities, including the design and coordination of team-facilitated multi-stakeholder workshops, participant surveys, analysis and reporting.
2002-03 Consultant, Ocean Management Research Network (National Secretariat), St. Mary's University. I worked with a team of researchers to develop a series of background papers in support of the 2003 OMRN National Conference.
2000
Legislative Intern, British Columbia Legislative Internship Program, Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Victoria, B.C. Ministry assignment, Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs: I analysed policies related to the co-management of BC parks, and drafted Ministerial Briefing Notes and a Memorandum of Understanding to support the implementation of the Nisga’a Final Agreement. Caucus assignment, Government Caucus: I conducted research in support of caucus affairs, including the preparation of a Private Member’s Bill to prohibit Grizzly bear hunting in BC.

Web Site Development and Training, Department of Geography, University of Victoria, Victoria, B.C. I built or redesigned various web sites, then provided training on web site maintenance to faculty and staff.
1998
Dendrochronology Research Assistant, Tree-ring Laboratory, Department of Geography, University of Victoria, Victoria, B.C. Field work: I collected tree cores and other physical data from various sites in coastal BC. Laboratory work: I analysed tree-ring chronologies and other data.
1996
Geographical Information Systems Analyst, GIS Services, Canadian Coast Guard, Government of Canada, Vancouver, B.C. I developed GIS applications with hydrographic charts and assisted in the development of a bathymetric modelling system for the Fraser River estuary.
1994-95
Wildlife Branch Research Assistant, Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks, Government of British Columbia, Victoria, B.C. I was on a team that administered the provincial limited entry hunt draw. I also managed data for a habitat monitoring project, published the provincial Standards for Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping, and developed the first Wildlife Branch web site.
1991-99
Swim Instructor and Lifeguard, Gordon Head Recreation Centre, District of Saanich, Victoria, B.C. In addition to teaching and lifeguarding duties, I conducted staff training and produced the lifeguard orientation manual.

Volunteer Experience

2001
President, Planning Students’ Association, School of Community and Regional Planning, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C. As elected President, I chaired PSA meetings, advocated student interests at School faculty meetings and on other university committees, developed a new budgeting system for the PSA and negotiated a cost-sharing partnership with the School.
