The Great Amen is a mixture of the Last Supper,
and the Holy Eucharist, and also the plot against Jesus. I began
sketching "The Great Amen" in 1991, after seeing what looked like disciples
at a table. This painting also includes a portion of the top left
corner of the "Nativity" painting in the right bottom corner.
While at Cursillo in May, 1992, spending time adoring the blessed sacrement (Body of Christ in a glass container surrounded by golden rays), I realized the bright circle of light (Copernicus crater in the photo) could represent a Monstrance and the Transubstantiation (miraculous changing of bread into Christ). This compelled me to finish the painting. |

Jesus appears in three different forms in this painting. One figure is a large face and shoulders at the top, encompassing the Transubstantiation. I also found Jesus sitting with the apostles blessing the bread and wine. His body merges into a bleeding red heart shaped face joined to a piece of bread. This bread is also shared with a blue Holy Spirit and and the third Jesus who appears to the right of Priests and people at a mass. When I happened to show a seminarian in Oregon a photo of my painting, he pointed out how these figures applied to "through Him, with Him, in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all Glory and Honour is yours, now and forever, Amen." This is when I thought "The Great Amen" should be the title. I had difficulty with the upper right corner where I saw what I thought were more apostles with the devil watching them. Then I interpreted that they could be the Pharisees meeting with Judas (who is riding away from the apostles) and their "communion" could be the blood money (pieces of silver). |
