Author Biography

For starters, here's the mini-bio from the Country Charmed book jacket:

Nicola lives in Surrey, British Columbia (Canada) with her husband, son, and several furry dependents. She divides her working life between freelance and contract writing, a library job, teaching a few creative writing workshops, and many hours helping to organize the Surrey International Writers' Conference.

I do all kinds of writing and have done so for many years. On contract I've done newsletters, brochures, marketing and fundraising material, reports, proposals, etc., etc. As a freelancer, under various pseudonyms, I've had about a dozen articles published (travel/history/general), some in on-line magazines, others in local and national newspapers. I have four other writing projects on the go at the moment, in the following priority order: another novel, my grandfather's memoirs, a biography of an infamous medieval woman, and a reference book on historical terms. And just to mix things up a bit more, the poetry muse occasionally descends and I manage a bit of verse as well. So, really, in terms of writing, I'm all over the map.

Like most writers, I'm forced to fit (squeeze, cram!) writing into a busy life (especially when my number one priority is being a good mom to my preschooler!) and that makes it a real challenge to get writing projects done. But I'm at the Surrey International Writers Conference (SIWC) each year (as an organizer, volunteer, and attendee) and that's a writing motivator if ever there was one. I leave each conference happily exhausted, wiser about the craft and business of writing, and with enough inspiration and motivation to last me through the year. I'd highly recommend it.
