Norway 2004 - Friday, September 24th - Lyse Kloster
Founded in 1146 Lyse Kloster was the first Cistercian monastery in Norway with the first monks being brought from the Fountains Abbey in England. The monastery grew rich and powerful and was one of the most important property owners in Norway at the time of the reformation when it became the property of the Danish King. Over the following centuries a gradual destruction of the buildings was allowed to take place and stone from Lyse was used in building the Rosenkrantz Tower in Bergen and the Kronborg Castle in Denmark. We were in good company as this is the most frequently visited cultural monument at Os.
