Little Canada March
Sunday September 26th 2004

Sunday, the 60th anniversary of the crash-landing, was the day of the Little Canada March, an annual event organized by Os Turlag. A special feature of this year's hike was the unveiling of a bronze relief plaque at the cabin. On a bright, pleasant morning everyone met at the Os Kommune building in Osoyro to register and choose which route to follow: either the original steep route or an 'easier', flatter route. Everyone received the 2004 pin. Then it was by car to the jumping off points. The group re-formed at the cabin now called 'Little Canada'. Everyone had an opportunity to look around, sign the register kept on a box on a tree nearby, and marvel at the tiny cabin that had housed 8 or more people hiding from the Germans during the war. After everyone had eaten the lunches that they had brought Jon Magne Bogevik, acting mayor of Samnanger, the kommune Little Canada is in, welcomed everyone. Helen told stories of war-time events and then the plaque was unveiled. The cabin is deteriorating and it had been decided to place the plaque there to record the historical significance of Little Canada. The plaque is a bronze casting done by Arne Mæland from an original wood carving by Jakob Hjelle, a leader of the Os MILORG and a renowned wood carver. After the long, wet hike out it Harvey was taken to a building where some of the original furniture from Little Canada during the Canadians' stay is stored for safe-keeping. As it was the last opportunity for us to get together we had dinner out with Helen, Tore, Eva Lis and Kjell and Merete.
