The Popular Participation Movement (PPM) was formally established as a campus club at Malaspina University-College in September 2005.  Its formation was a response to the lack of  political awareness, involvement, and action in the community in general but especially among youth.  The  PPM actively challenges the norms of Nanaimo's political culture.

              OBJECTIVES

 -  to increase awareness of local and global
       socio-political issues

 -  to form and expand a network of socially
       conscious people

 -  to involve youth in national, provincial,
       and municipal elections

 -  to promote a voice of opposition to
       the privatization of natural resources,
       public property and public services

 -  to support other active community groups

 -  to champion the philosophy of 'people and
       the environment before profit'
