The Team
The Cold Lake Penguins were established in 1990 and entered in the Edmonton Rugby Union 4th Division. Two founding members have remained with the club since the beginning - Rick "The Old Man", "The Weasel", "Free Loader" Bailey. Another founder, Kerry "Fuzzy" Shaw returned to the fold after a one year hiatus in Calgary in 1999. The early years are mostly a drunken haze where the Club adjusted to the rugby lifestyle. The only sure thing is that we got ourselves a reputation for playing hard and partying even harder.
After a few years, we got serious (or sober) and decided that losing wasn't all that much fun. A coach from Australia helped a little too! "Dog" moulded (and beat) us into contenders and 1994 saw us have our best season ever, winning the division regular season, but losing the championship game in a heartbreaker that went into double overtime. In 1995 we moved into 3rd Division and have done battle there ever since.
Original Penguin colours are Black and White quarter
panels, but changed to Black and White with 3 Red stripes to please our military
sponsors. We returned to our original colours for our 10th Anniversary
and have stuck with them ever since.
Once the
snow is gone, practises are held at our pitch on Wednesdays at 1900 hrs. Our pitch
is located at Imperial Park beside the new Energy Centre. Anyone 17 and older is invited to come
out. Games are played on Saturdays
from May through to August with playoffs in the first weeks of September. Check out The
Fixtures for specific details of our upcoming 2008 schedule and results as
the season progresses.
The Penguins RFC have been attempting to start a Women's team for a number of years. Come on out and try the fastest growing female sport in North America. Contact Dawn Hidson for more details.
