RE: POPPIES AND REMEMBRANCE DAY
November 11 is Remembrance Day, and is an opportunity to demonstrate to our Veterans and serving
Military Members, young and old, our appreciation and support for their sacrifices. All Guard
Members are encouraged to buy a poppy and wear it proudly. You are also encouraged to come out to
local Remembrance Day Services in Guard uniform and show your support. If you are on duty on
November 11 and are not otherwise occupied, and can do so discreetly and respectfully, feel free
to come by and fly the flag at any Services in your response area.
The British Columbia Ambulance Service Paramedic Honour Guard, working with our partners at the
Royal Canadian Legion and Veterans Affairs Canada, has established some guidelines for the wearing
of poppies on our uniforms:
- Poppies MUST be worn on the left side of your shirt or outer garment,
typically on the lapel, over your heart. On dress uniforms, they are to be
worn on the lower lapel (below the Coat of Arms pin). Poppies must NEVER be
worn on the right side.
- Past protocols have seen poppies worn on the brim of a forage cap, beret or
other service cap. This is no longer acceptable.
- In lieu of a cloth poppy, the metal poppy pins may be worn on the left side of your
shirt or outer garment. The metal poppy pin has also been approved by The Legion for
wear year round.
- In lieu of the straight pin supplied with the cloth poppy, a small Canadian flag pin may
be worn in the centre and used to secure the poppy to your garment. This too is based on
tradition.
- Paramedic Honour Guard Members are once again reminded of their responsibility to provide
guidance and education to our colleagues and staff. With current information in hand,
please feel free to pass on the order of dress. Experience has shown us that our Paramedics
want to look good and want to present themselves appropriately; they simply have not had any
direction in the past, and this is our opportunity to provide it.
Should you have any questions regarding Remembrance Day Services or displaying a poppy, please
contact Superintendent Bruce Harford, Honour Guard OIC.
Thank you for your ongoing professional and respectful support of our Veterans.
