Hungary Coat Of Arms

Kingdom of Hungary's Coat of Arms
prior to 1918.

This is the "large coat of arms" of Hungary, determined by a royal order on Feb. 09, 1874, confirmed in 1895 and 1916. In the centre, the "small coat of arms" is located. The heraldic right side of the small coat of arms is divided by red and white stripes seven times representing the seven Hungarian tribes that arrived in Transylvania in 896 A.D. and are called the "Arpad-stripes". The four white strips represent the four main rivers of historic Hungary: Duna, Tisza, Drava, Szava. On the heraldic left side, the three green hills represent the three main mountains of historic Hungary: Tatra, Fatra, Matra. On the middle hilltop, from an open crown, the "apostolic" double cross emerges which was awarded by Pope II. Sylvester to I. Saint Stephen, the first Hungarian king (1000 A.D.), in recognition of his mission to turn the pagan Hungarians to Christianity. The red background, the white "apostolic" cross and the green hills constitute the colors of the Hungarian national flag: white and green. The "small coat of arms" is surrounded by the shields of the territories that were of the Hungarian crown until 1921. Upper right: three golden lion heads with crowns: Dalmatia. Middle right: in blue background, a running marten in a red stream, with six-pointed golden star above: Sclavonia. Upper left: red and white field checkered 25 times: Croatia. Middle left: divided by a red ribbon, above is a black eagle with the sun on the left and the waxing moon on the right, below are seven bastion towers: Transylvania. Bottom: in red background, a two-headed eagle stands on a cliff surrounded by the sea, resting his left leg on a fallen jar from which water is pouring out: Fiume. On the top, the Hungarian holy crown is resting and the shield is called the "medium coat of arms" of Hungary. With two angels holding the shield from left and right, it becomes the "large coat of arms" of Hungary.
