TWU members accept proposed deal
November 18, 2005        News Category: feature

Over 64.1 percent of TWU members or a total of 6,808 votes accepted the deal.
Members of the Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) have voted to accept the latest proposed agreement with Telus. “We're pleased our members have decided to move forward,” said President Bruce Bell. “We've become a national union in an expanding industry. The potential is enormous. It's time for Telus and the TWU to work together and build a relationship that benefits all of our members.” The November 6 deal, recommended by the TWU Bargaining Committee and the Executive Council, included several amendments.

Over 64.1 percent of TWU members or a total of 6,808 votes accepted the deal. In total, 10,566 votes were cast and 3,308 members voted “No”. The previous deal, reached October 30, was rejected by 50.3 percent of the members who voted. TWU members walked off the job July 21 to prevent Telus from forcing its version of a Collective Agreement on TWU members. “This labour dispute has been a challenging time for everyone,” said Bell. “The Courts, the Canada Industrial Relations Board and the Federal Liberals didn't do us any favours. Not all of our members are happy with the deal. But it's good to be back at work in time for Christmas.”

Inspiration:
"Power concedes nothing without a demand.  It never did,
and it never will.  Find out just what people will submit to,
and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong
which will be imposed upon them; and this will continue till
they have resisted with either words or blows, or with both.
The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those
who they suppress."     Frederick Douglas, abolitionist, 1849

"The time had just come when I had been pushed as far as I could
stand to be pushed, I suppose.  They placed me under arrest.
And I wasn't afraid.  I don't know why I wasn't, but I didn't
feel afraid.  I had decided that I would have to know once and
for all what rights I had as a human being and a citizen, even
in Montgomery, Alabama."        Rosa Parks, 1913 - 24/10/2005,
civil rights heroine and catalyst for the Montgomery Bus Boycott

"Action is eloquence."   William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

"History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of
this period of social transition was not the strident
clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence
of the good people."    Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Trivial Pursuit: When was our last collective agreement? (eighteenth day of January, 1999.)

Telus insiders cash in shares, options

Bloomberg        Saturday, January 8, 2005, Page B6

Telus Corp. chairman Brian Canfield and at least eight company executives sold shares in November and December, taking advantage of a doubling in the stock over the past two years.

Darren Entwistle's compensation...

2000 = $  764,000
2001 = $1,915,683 = 150% increase from 2000
2002 = $3,140,000 =  64% increase from 2001
2003 = $4,250,000 =  35% increase from 2002
2004 = $6,550,000 =  54% increase from 2003

Observations:
bulletIt took 1784 days to reach an agreement. This work stoppage was unnecessary! Not withstanding the human toll, the monies wasted should have been used to get the "yes" vote 5 years ago. This way we would not have eroded our customer base, employee loyalty and workplace cooperation. Duh....
