Isn't this ironic?
In conversation today with someone I shall refer to as CriticOfTheGods, I mentioned that it would be ironic if the restaurant we go to for lunch, the one he had just comicly referred to as being on fire, would have burnt down before we arrived for our next afternoon meal.
He pointed out that this wasn't ironic at all. I disagreed, but then relented and said it could be halfway between a comment and ironic - for which there is no applied term, which was somewhat ironic. Once again disagreement...
It appears that since the release of Allana Morisette's Ironic, newsgroups have been belittling anyone who says 'This is so ironic...' - thus the precedence for the dishing of my original statement....so I sent the CriticOfTheGods off to find 5 ironic statements that everyone can agree upon...BTW, here's the meaning of the term - and a good discussion by Zoe Williams of The Guardian.
