MEDICINAL USES:
Like most members of the Rose is astringent. It is also anti-inflammatory and antibiotic . All of which can be attributed to the large quantities of tannins present in the plant. Agrimony tones the mucus membranes and is one the herbs most recommended for treating mild urinary incontinence. It is an effective treatment for cystitis and lithiasis, gastro-intestinal irritation, diarrhoea, inflamed kidneys, gall bladder and bile ducts. It contains bitters that stimulate gall bladder activity, thus making it a tonic for the liver. It is also valuable as an astringent wash to soothe skin irritations.
The combination of astringency with the stimulation of digestive and liver secretions makes it especially applicable to most digestive tract problems, relieving inflammation while helping to restore function. It is the best herb to use for childhood diarrhoea and appendicitis, though its best-known use is as a soothing gargle for sore throat and laryngitis.
Its high tannin content helps to control excessive mucous discharge and tonify the tissues in the bronchia and lungs.
The flowers have a pleasing smell, and with the leaves, make a soothing and refreshing tea. To make the tea, use one tablespoon per cup of dried herb. Dosage for the tincture is 1 – 4 ml, every 4 hours as needed.
