Alum Root

Heuchera sp.

MEDICINAL USES:

Alum  Root is rich in tannins.  With tannin content of 10- 20%, it is one of the most powerful astringents available to us.  Since it contains a variety of tannin complexes, its effect is well dispersed through the body, making it useful for a variety of disorders; nearly anything for which an astringent is called, including: sore throat, diarrhoea, ulcers and other stomach problems. Herbalists often use it to enhance the activity of more specific astringents such as trillium and it is especially well known as a mouthwash for a sore throat or gums and a fine antidote for diarrhoea, stomach flu or dysentery.
