Baneberry NNN

Actea rubra

MEDICINAL USES:

The root of Baneberry is a powerful anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and sedative, though it is also a violent purgative and emetic.  Its usefulness is limited by the fact that it makes most people who take feel very ill.  In spite of this, some First Nations Peoples used it to stimulate milk production as well as purge the system after childbirth.  Michael Moore recommends the dry plant tincture in dosages of 10 – 20 drops, up to 3 times daily.  This perhaps avoids some of the emetic effect of the decocted root.

CAUTION:  The whole plant is somewhat toxic, but the berries are especially so.  As few as six berries have known to cause death in children through suppression of the vagus nerve function, leading to cardiac or respiratory failure.
