Bergamot, Wild (Horsemint)

Monarda fistulosa

MEDICINAL USES:

Wild Bergamot is carminative, diaphoretic and diuretic.  Like most other members of the mint family, it is soothing to the digestive system and is an effective treatment for colds, fevers, sore throats and catarrh.  It is also known as a kidney tonic (mostly because of the diuretic properties) and used as an infusion or as a poultice for treatment of skin conditions.

Monarda species contain carvacrol and thymol, compounds proven to help prevent the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, a compound found to be lacking in Alzheimer’s patients.

OTHER USES:  The above ground parts are edible and often used as an aromatic potherb or a flavourful addition to salads.
