MEDICINAL USES:
Chickweed is best known for its use as an external demulcent and emollient – a remedy for soothing irritation caused by cuts, scrapes, bites, hives and other skin irritations. It speeds the healing of ulcerous sores or infected injuries. It may be applied as a salve or the fresh plant used as a poultice. Internally it is also soothing to the mucous membranes as well as mildly antibiotic, the combination of which makes it an excellent remedy for use in treating chest complaints. It is high in vitamin C and flavonoids and contains steroidal saponins that are thought to aid in fat metabolism. Chickweed is also a mild laxative and tonic to the circulatory system and the kidneys. The roots are tonic, laxative and diuretic.
Chickweed also has a reputation as a blood cleanser, especially in treating blood poisoning or tetanus using a combination of a Chickweed poultice and a decoction taken internally.
OTHER USES: The leaves are nutritious and can be eaten like spinach. The tiny seeds, if enough are collected, can be ground to make nutritious flour.
