Couchgrass

Agropyron repens

MEDICINAL USES:

Couchgrass is diuretic, antimicrobial and demulcent to the urinary tract.  It is rich in antinflammatory saponins and helps to flush out the urinary system.  It is used to treat urinary tract infections, where it relieves irritation and inflammation, and also for treating enlarged prostate gland.  It simultaneously stimulates and soothes weak, underactive or inflamed kidneys and helps to ease the pain of kidney stones.  Couchgrass was also widely used to ease the pain and inflammation associated with gout and rheumatism.

The German Commission E recognizes the antinflammatory and cleansing properties of Couchgrass, approving it for treatment of urinary tract inflammation and as a preventative therapy for kidney stones.  Dosage of the herb is 2 teaspoons, simmered for 10 minutes, per cup of water or 3 – 6 ml (45 – 90 drops) of the tincture 5 times daily or as needed.

CAUTION: Do not use Couchgrass when there is oedema from kidney or heart deficiencies.
