Figwort

Scrophularia lanceolata

MEDICINAL USES:

Figwort is an alterative and diuretic, rather slow acting, but effective as a kidney and lymph tonic.  Although similar in appearance and action to the eastern and European species, the western varieties have less cardiotonic effects than they do.  Our Figwort is safer to use as a long-term anti-inflammatory for people with low-grade skin problems and a tendency toward mucosal inflammations.  For conditions related to poor liver function, such as frequent cold sores, rectal aches, sore throats or eczema Figwort is most effective if you take it with Yellow Dock.  For arthritis aggravated by damp, it may work best if used with Devil’s Club and topical applications of arnica.  The salve, tincture (applied as a liniment) or powdered herb is very soothing for bites, stings, itching from vesicular eruptions (raised itchy spots full of fluid) ringworm, haemorrhoids and joint injuries as well as inflamed breasts.

CAUTION: Although our native Figworts have no observed cardiotonic action, European relatives with very similar chemical constituents, are known for it.   As a matter of caution until we learn more about the glycosides in our Figworts, it is advisable to avoid using Figwort if you are pregnant, have tachycardia or are taking heart medication.
