Ground Ivy

MEDICINAL USES:

The aerial parts of Ground Ivy are tonic, decongestant and diuretic.  It is a gentle herb you can give to children to treat throat and chest problems, chronic congestion and sinusitis, as well as gastrointestinal upsets.  It helps to soothe gastritis and stomach upsets, but also helps to dry up watery and mucoid secretions and ease the discomfort of diarrhoea.  Ground Ivy is good medicine for any condition where excess mucus is a problem.  Its diuretic properties can be useful in treating kidney disorders, and may contribute to its reputation for helping to clear heavy metals from the system.  Ground Ivy is high in vitamins and minerals.  Ground Ivy has a historical use as a spring tonic and to prevent scurvy.  At one time, it was valued in the treatment of tuberculosis.  Dosage of the tincture is 2-4 ml or 30 – 60 drops as needed.  Dosage of the tincture is one tablespoon of herb per cup of tea.

OTHER USES:  Ground Ivy, once known as Alehoof, was traditionally used to flavour and clarify beer before hops became more popular for the purpose
