Hops

Humulus lupulus

MEDICINAL USES:

Although Hops have astringent, antiseptic and antispasmodic properties, most of us know them as a mild sedative.  They help to relax the central nervous system and are a well-known remedy for insomnia.  German Commission E approves Hops to help to ease tension and anxiety and to combat symptoms of restlessness.  Hops, however, are a mild sedative, and not usually of much help where marked depression is present.  The bitter properties of the flowers stimulate appetite and digestion (as well as flavour beer).  These properties are also responsible for Hops reputation as liver tonic and blood cleanser.  Pillows stuffed with Hops are a traditional way to ensure a sound sleep and to soothe tense nerves.

We don’t fully understand all of the medicinal potential in Hop plant.  It contains many medicinally active ingredients, though their exact mode of action on the system is not clear.  Hop extracts have been used with some success to treat tuberculosis and dysentery and have shown activity against staphylococcus and other bacteria.  Hops antispasmodic properties can be useful in treating nervous indigestion, peptic ulcers irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and stress-related digestive problems.  The bitters in Hops are an aid to digestive function, stimulating the secretion of bile and other digestive juices, enhancing the action of the liver.  The tannins present in them aid in the healing of irritated and inflammatory conditions, and are useful for treating diarrhoea, while its antiseptic action combats infections.  Hops also appear to have a mild estrogenic action that make them an excellent remedy for any problem related to menopause or to suppressed and painful periods.

Dosage is ½ gram of the flowers or 1 – 4 ml (15 –60 drops) of the tincture every four hours as needed.  As a sedative hops are usually most effective when taken with another sedative such as Valerian or Skullcap (see the appropriate section for more information on Valerian and Skullcap).
