Licorice, Wild

Glycyrrhiza lepidota

MEDICINAL USES:

The root is the part used.   Our Wild Licorice is not as well studied, nor extensively used in medicine, as the European and Asian species.  Although it has the same primary active ingredient, glycyrrhizin, as they do it generally contains it in smaller amounts than the above.  It is rich in mucilage, which makes it useful against ulcers and helps to sooth and relax the mucous membranes of the lungs.

The soothing effect of Licorice on the mucous membranes makes it useful in treating sore throats and stomach upsets.  It is also used to help regulate menstruation and to ease menstrual cramps. Chinese Licorice is soothing to inflammatory conditions and is used a great deal in Chinese and Ayurvedic medical systems.  It is a mild immune and reproductive system stimulant.  The Chinese especially favour it as an agent to enhance the activity of other ingredients in herbal mixtures.

CAUTION: Do not use Wild Licorice during pregnancy. Do not take Wild Licorice for extended periods as it can lead to sodium and potassium retention and consequently, high blood pressure.
