Melissa (Lemon Balm)

Melissa officinalis

MEDICINAL USES:

Melissa, or Lemon Balm, is a carminative, sedative, antidepressant, diaphoretic, and febrifuge.  Melissa is a gentle and soothing medicine that you may use with positive effect to treat a broad range of disorders.  Its diaphoretic properties make it useful in minor viral infections; a cooling and refreshing drink for a feverish patient, inducing mild perspiration and an increased sense of well-being.  It is a simple sedative and effective mood elevator for minor burnout, and is a useful antispasmodic for a variety of conditions, including menstrual cramps, stomach-ache, diarrhoea, and gas pain.  Overall, it is an excellent remedy for children, and a generally comforting and uplifting tea.

The constituents tend to be somewhat variable in concentration, though the overall effects of the plant seem to be consistent.  The German Commission E recognizes Melissa’s use as a sedative and carminative, approving it for use in treating sleeping disorders and digestive complaints.  The Commission also endorses the use of Melissa to treat migraine symptoms.

Recent studies using an extract of Melissa to treat herpes simplex showed some very positive responses in majority of those tested, including reduced scabbing in some cases and a complete remission of symptoms in others.  This is especially significant in that conventional drugs and therapies are of little use in relieving herpes symptoms.
