The
young high-energy Celtic band, MUTINY GONE OVERBOARD, has been making
waves on the Western Canadian Celtic music scene. The band performs
songs from the Celtic diaspora- Ireland, Scotland, Newfoundland, Nova
Scotia, Quebec, and of course, British Columbia- and mixes them with
crowd pleasing originals. MGO takes these traditional elements and combines
them with pop, jazz, and country influences thus creating a sound all
their own. Due to their stage presence, musicianship, and impressive
harmonies, the band has a growing fan base across BC.
Mutiny Gone Overboard
started when they were all part of a high school band. One St. Patrick's
Day, Paddy and Katie got together to play in the afternoon at Culpepper's
Restaurant in Vancouver. Paddy provided guitar accompaniment while Katie
played flute. Considering how well the two were received they decided
to start a band. They enlisted the brothers Powell who brought a new
dimension to the band's sound. After a year of playing upbeat Irish
and maritime songs together, the band decided it was time for a CD to
further promote itself.
March 2002 saw the
release of the band's self-titled debut CD. The CD, which received airplay
on college radio, not only featured the band's ability to "spice
up" traditional numbers but also showcased the beginning of MGO's
songwriting. Their originals can best be described as a mix between
country, folk, and pop with Celtic roots. Many have described the band
as a "Celtic version of the Bare naked Ladies".
MGO will be playing
at festivals, pubs, outdoor shows, and special events for the remainder
of the year. The band hopes to commence work on their second CD in early
2004. Check them out now so you could say you knew them way back when...
