Corrections and additions to Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies (1999 version)

e-mail corrections hereHH01518A.gif (838 bytes)

These are some of the corrections in an updated Scrambles book out now.

Akamina Ridge Don't follow boundary cutline, it may have deadfall now. Hike to Forum Lake. Go up open slopes at left rear of Lake, or follow signed trail from lake shore to right side of lake and onto ridge between Forum and Wall Lakes.

No free camping in K-Country Overnight backcountry fee of $3.00 for funding trail maintenance in Kananaskis Country applicable as of summer 1999, check with visitor info booth and Ranger stations. Yes, all good things must come to an end.  Will they now clear deadfall enroute to Aster Lake since they are charging a fee? Doubtful.

Mt Temple: (also applies for Sheol, Panorama Ridge, Eiffel Pk) Parties of 6 or more ONLY are allowed in Larch and Paradise Valley when the Grizzly-in-residence is around. That is most of the summer and fall, probably. If the bear eventually moves on, this restriction will be lifted. Check Lake Louise visitor centre. Download Parks Canada Summer 2001 PDF brochure about bear closures HERE

Quota at Aster Lake in Kananaskis: At Aster Lake random camping is no longer permitted as of summer 1999 and due to bear concerns, food storage lockers are supplied. Authorities want everyone to camp near food lockers at Aster Lake outlet stream. No exceptions for climbers apparently; They really don't care how much further you have to walk.  (403-591-6322)

Yamnuska parking change: The parking lot and trail head has been relocated slightly to rehabilitate the meadows where parking was previously. This adds a bit more walking. Cable in place at the crux ledge 2002.

Mount Sparrowhawk apparently has more deadfall on the approach since a wind storm in September '99.

Mount Weed parking spot is now paved.

Mt Ward Can't drive the last km or so due to washout.

Mt Warspite leave the trail at intrepretive stop #8 is best on approach.

Mt Sarbach  is (apparently) 73 km north of TransCanada Hwy, not 45 km as I mention. The given distance 5.2 kms south of Sask Crossing is correct, however.

Thanks to Roberto Pavesio for forwarding suggestions and new info. As of September 2000, Roberto has accomplished all the scrambles in the new edition of the book! Congratulations go out to him.
