Isabelle Peak 2938 m
Kootenay National Park, B.C.
(Click thumbnails to enlarge)
Trailside view up avalanche slopes of Isabelle Peak, on a fine July day.
Isabelle Peak is accessed by a good hiking trail, but is infrequently ascended. Nonetheless, it is a fine scramble with rewarding views. The ascent fits nicely into a summer day and gets you away from the crowds.
Traversing a snowy ridge on
ascent. It is common to carry an ice axe on routes in the Canadian Rockies in case you
encounter snow along ridges and on steeper slopes along the way. Snow patches often
persist well into August on some routes.
Typical scrambling up a short
rockband.
A slight detour along the way for a photo opportunity.
View of snowcapped Mount Ball
(3311 m) from the summit of Isabelle Peak. Mount Ball is also a scramble and is described
in Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies.
An endless landscape of
Rockies' peaks to the east with mighty Mount Assiniboine at
upper left of photo. Colorado may have higher peaks, for example, Long's Peak, but
our Canadian Rockies are more spectacular. Of course, I'm just a little biased...
This ascent is just one of over 155 scrambles fully described in my new guidebook, Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies, which can be ordered online by clicking here.
