Dear Parish of All Saints,

Welcome to the Anglican Catholic Church of Canada! I am delighted, as are your new brothers and sisters in Calgary, at your decision.

I know that you have a lot of work ahead of you: fund-raising, coming to terms with your new situation, and supporting one another during this time of adjustment, but all this is possible if you (and I) remember one thing from the Catechism in the Book of Common Prayer. It is on page 549 at the top of the page. Father John will ask you to look it up, and then ask you the Question, and I want you to give him the answer with a good loud voice!

Yes, the New Commandment is to love one another as our Lord Jesus Christ loved us and gave Himself up for our sins. It is charity — self-giving, or unselfish love — that is characteristic of the true Christian. Our Lord can command this of us because charity is not a matter of the emotions, it is a matter of the will. Let us wish with all our strength the very best for one another, and then carry it out in thought, word and deed.

Fr. John, and all of you, have been through a great deal of unhappiness lately, but I urge you to put all that behind you, not to dwell on it, to forgive those who have sinned against you as you hope to be forgiven your sins, and then don’t look back. Look rather to our Lord Jesus, who died and rose again for us, who gives us His Holy Spirit as a foretaste of heavenly glory to come, and who in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar — His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity — dwells in the midst of your church, and on whom in Holy Communion you feed in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving, offering Him yourselves, you souls and bodies in joyful sacrifice to Him to do His will.

By the grace of God, build a Parish which recognizes that its first duty is to celebrate the Holy Eucharist, in union with all the Angels and Saints, in a manner that is as beautiful as possible. That is the first duty of the Church of God. Love one another. Take you part in the Parish’s labours and councils according to whatever gifts of grace God has given you; and pray, work, and give the spread of the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, One God, forever and ever. Amen.

I hope to see you all later this year.

God bless you,

+ Peter Wilkinson, OSG
