The Pleasures

Alsatian picnic fare can be gathered from half-timbered shops along cobblestone streets; the perfect choice for a day of castle, vineyard or mountain touring. Medieval villages are strewn along the wine route and offer strolls through walled towns, rich with flower covered, Renaissance houses and ancient churches filled with works of art. This is the “doll house of Europe”.
French and German are spoken, in addition to Alsatian, the local dialect that is a combination of the two. Restaurants range from small, family-run “tarte flambe” cafes to 3 star Michelin status; and everything in between.  Ferme Auberge- Farm Lodges, in the Vosges mountains offer the pleasures of country fare-game, casserole and soft ripened cheeses with eau-de-vie; set amid sweet-scented pastures and rolling forests. Strasbourg is the seat of the Parliament of Europe and one of our favourite cities. It offers “La petite France” quarter, boat tours on the River Il, museums, the Strasbourg Cathedral, shopping, the arts and fine dining. Hiking and cycling are popular in the vineyards and Vosges mountains. Many other attractions showcase the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Alsace. Roman, culinary and wine roads are mapped. Wine and food festivals and candle light concerts beckon. Two castles are within easy walking distance in the forests above the apartment.  Local wine, Alsatian beer, regional dishes and desserts are served, near the castles, at the forest ranger’s house.  Vive la france!
Day trips into the Black Forest of Germany are a feast for the senses. The flower-filled markets and the casino, concerts and baths at Baden-Baden delight.
