Greg Moore

Karting Greg Moore '90 Greg Moore '91 Here is Greg Moore racing at the (long gone) Westwood Mountain High Sprint facility in Port Moody. This photo is, I think, from the 1990 racing season.
Greg is pictured in the next one being presented with a trophy for winning his class at a Club race in 1991. This race was in Port Moody, at the Rocky Point Marina and the presenter was Westwood Club President, Lynn Johnson.

The following was put together shortly after the passing of Greg.

Greg's gone!!

By now everyone is aware of the horrible crash at the last race of the 1999 "Cart Series" of auto racing, that took the life of Westwood Karting's most famous alumni - Greg Moore. Greg spent his youth karting with Westwood. First he raced at the old track, at the Mountain High Raceway in Port Coquitlam, and later in various parking lots around the greater Vancouver area. These locations were after all of the motorsports were removed from the raceway so that the Government of the day could flip the land for a fast buck! As our Club was homeless, we spent some transient days racing anywhere that we could borrow or rent cheap, set-up a safe course and rent insurance for. Places like the "Rocky Point Marina" <above> in Port Moody, or Lansdowne Shopping Centre in Richmond. Greg was a 2 time IKF Grand National Champion, while racing as a Junior Road Racer under the Westwood banner. Greg's connections to Westwood were always strong, making appearances at Club functions like the 1998 Awards banquet, where he presented the trophies to our Club members and signed autographs, while still finding time to laugh with us and tell stories. It was an event that he was going to try to attend again in 1999. He and his Dad helped in the sponsoring of the Westwood Club hosted "IKF Gold Cup" race held at Tradex in the 1999 season. Greg's Mom, Donna, was the Club Secretary for a long stretch of time - even after Greg had moved beyond karting. For her dedication to the Club, when she stepped down from the position she was made an honourary Life Member of the Westwood Karting Association. Greg was well liked by everyone in our Club that knew him. We at Westwood share with his family the loss of Greg, but recognize that the families have lost much more than us. We will always remember #99, Greg Moore.

As of the November 1999 Club meeting date, the Westwood Karting Association has officially retired the now famous number 99 from all Club racing, in respect and to honour Greg. He ran his entire racing life with the same number, which he decided on by the fact that it was the number printed on his first Club membership card that he recieved from Westwood Karting. No Westwood member will be using the number 99 for Club racing.

Also as a tribute to Greg, the "Fast Award" trophy has been renamed the "Greg Moore Memorial" trophy. Greg won the award three times in his karting years, and fast is what Greg was all about.

Greg's retired number joined that of the only other retired number for our Club, (at the time of Greg's crash) that of Bob Whitehead's number 1. Bob was running number 1 as the defending champion in his class. Bob was the founding President of our Club and was instrumental in getting the Club located at the - then new - Westwood Mountain High Raceway. In the mid-1960's Bob was killed in a freak accident while racing in the States. A mechanical failure sent a piece of his motor through his helmet, something that would be most unlikely to happen with todays safety requirements.

Since then Westwood Karting has retired it's third number, that of Steve DaSilva. Steve was a very popular member of our Club and has had the Sportsmanship trophy renamed for him. Number 96, Steve DaSilva was killed as a passenger in a non-racing car crash locally.
