About Paul Skoczylas

Paul and Brierly at Takakkaw Falls, Yoho
Paul Skoczylas M.Sc., P.Eng. was born in South-Western Ontario (Canada) and attended high school in Toronto. He moved west to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta, and has remained in Edmonton since then.

He is a mechanical engineer, working for an engineering research company in Edmonton. His specialization is in artificial lift, fluid flow and heat transfer.

In addition to photography, he is an active whitewater kayaker, and enjoys being in the mountains with his wife, daughter, son, and Golden Retriever (Brierly, pictured above with Paul at Takakkaw Falls in Yoho National Park).

He has been taking photographs since he was about nine years old, working his way up to a Ricoh SLR by the age of about 11. The Ricoh was replaced by a series of three Pentax SLRs, the last two of which were being used up to 2003, when they were stolen. Paul has since used Canon cameras, and switched to digital in 2004. For a period of several years in his teens, he spent much time in the darkroom, mostly with black and white developing and printing, but also with some colour printing (both from slides and negatives).

Paul currently shoots with a Canon 30D, with Canon 17-40L, Canon 24 TSE, Canon 300/2.8L IS and Sigma 50-500 lenses, mounted with Wimberley plates on a RRS BH-55 ballhead on a Manfrotto 055Pro tripod.

Pictures on this site were taken either with digital capture, or on slide film--mostly Fuji (various speeds of Velvia, Provia and Sensia), but a couple of Kodachromes--with the exception of the above picture (which was shot on Fuji Superia negative film). The slides were scanned with a Minolta Scan Dual III, and the digital darkroom work was done in Adobe Photoshop Elements 1.0 and 2.0, and Photoshop CS3. RAW conversions were done both with Canon DPP and Adobe ACR. HDR and Pano work was done with Photomatix, AutoPanoPro, Panorama Factory, and Photoshop CS3.
