About Jay
Springs
|
|
With
increasing demand for naturally raised food, we
have joined with a select group of like-minded
family farms in the BC Interior to sell their lamb under our Jay Springs Lamb label. We'd like
to introduce you to some of our fellow lamb producers.
| Beniot
& Sylvie Charrier’s farm
is on a plateau above Shuswap Lake outside Celista, BC.
Both Beniot and Sylvie emigrated from France many years ago,
and to visit their farm is like taking a trip to France.
All work on the farm is done by horse power and the farm is
laid out in small rotational paddocks to produce grass fed lambs.
They have 20 Charollais (French breed) ewes and their lambs
are usually sold in August. |

Betty
& Norm Peters
are another family that have been ranching in the same place for a
long time and very involved in 4H, the cattle industry and always
have had a small flock of sheep.
Betty and Norm are only one part of a large family making up
Dominion Creek Ranch in the Heffley and Louis Creek valleys.
The flock of 60 mainly Suffolk and Dorset ewes can be seen in
wooded pastures on the way up to Sun Peaks Ski Resort.
This flock is used to keep the grass manageable around the
home place for the summer.
This flock is very similar to Jay Springs Ranch.
The lambs are raised on grass with some finished on whole
barley.
Their lambs are ready for market, like ours, from June to
October.
In
addition to their lamb, we have been working with the Peters' to
bring Dominion Creek Ranch beef to Farmer's Markets.

| Bob
& Nancy Stephens live at Cherry Creek just west of Kamloops
and run RMS Border Collies which is a Border Collie breeding and
training facility. They
have 40 ewes which are predominantly Suffolk.
They use two rams, one Suffolk and the other a North Country
Cheviot. Their sheep
are pastured on their own acreage and two other neighbour's
acreages. Bob
and Nancy train Border Collies for the local and some not so local
ranchers and for a few people who trial in ISDS style trials.
They both trial all over North America and Bob participated
in the World Sheep Dog Championship in Tullamore, Ireland in 2005. Bob also judges and gives clinics throughout North America
and will be judging a trial and giving a clinic in Germany this
summer. He also writes
an article on training for the Beef in BC magazine, the magazine of
the BC Cattlemens' Association. They
also supply 10 or 11 lambs to the 4H kids for their projects.
Bob and Nancy love their sheep and are continually trying to
improve the quality of the market lambs they are producing. |

Galye
Cochlan
&
Susan Lawson
live on a ranch on the outskirts of Ashcroft, BC called Desert
Gardens. They
are part of a larger ranch which is owned and operated by family
members producing cattle, draft horses, sheep and vegetables.
They mainly wholesale vegetables, but do have an on-farm
fruit stand and greenhouse.
Gayle and Susan own the sheep.
Their flock of 30 Suffolk ewes can be seen grazing above the
large draft horse pasture on the hillside going into Ashcroft.
Gayle is a well-known stock dog trainer and judge. These
lambs are usually sold in July. |
