Woodlot Licence 311

Geoff applied for and was awarded Woodlot Licence 311 in 1985;  his was the second of the new small scale farm woodlots to be awarded in the BC interior.  The woodlot is presently in it’s fifth five-year cut rotation and is operated and managed under the business name of Pemberton Ridge Timber Inc.

Woodlot Licence 311The woodlot is made up of two deeded quarter sections of private land, 3 quarter sections of crown land which are included in the ranch’s grazing lease and 3 other quarter sections of crown land, for a total of 722.5 hectares.

Woodlot 311 is certified with Green Tag Forestry, a "third party" certification that was developed in the USA by the National Forestry Association.  A Green Tag Forest is woodland whose stewardship has been certified as incorporating good forestry practices that assure a balance of natural diversity and sustainable forest productivity.

In March 2004 our woodlot was audited to test the new Pan Canadian Woodlot Standard certification developed by the Canadian Federation of Woodlot Owners.  Woodlot 311 was found to be in conformity with the requirements of this standard; this certification is currently being reviewed by other certification organizations with a view to eventual endorsement as complimentary to their programs

Some history

For the first five-year cut on Woodlot 311, Geoff was able to do his own planning and logging paperwork and the majority of woodlot management with minimum input and expense from a Registered Professional Forester (RPF).   By the time of the third five-year cut  the Forest Practices Code was being put in place and managing a woodlot licence required being current on regulation changes.

At this time, we had formed the family partnership. and both Dean and Jennifer were employed by our RPF. They educated themselves on forestry and woodlot operations, regulation and organization related to the woodlot and slowly took over woodlot management.

This cycle ended with Dean taking over the operational end of the woodlot and logging for the ranch partnership on a contract basis through his own company, Jay Springs Forestry Consulting.  Jennifer and Chris concentrated on the development planning and management part of the woodlot, becoming self-educated in forestry and staying current with changing forestry regulations.

In 2003 we formed Pemberton Ridge Timber Inc.  and transferred the Woodlot Licence from Geoff and Shirley to the company.   Operation and  management  of the family's  timber land remains with Dean and Jay Springs Forestry Consulting.
