Cold Reading

Cold reading is a practiced skill. No matter how good an actor you are, the physical process of cold reading can hold you back if you don't practice it regularly.   Practicing everyday is recommended!  Get a good book and use it to practice. Look down, get your sentence, look up and say it sounding natural and NOT SOUNDING LIKE YOU ARE READING. It should sound conversational and should be real and natural. Create the environment in your mind.  Are there other people involved?

You know you are getting good when you sound real and natural. It should seem like you are not reading at all but just talking conversationally.  It takes HOURS to get good at it. Every skill you have has taken many hours, days or years of practice to achieve a level of quality.  Your acting is no different!

Every sports person spends hours of practice time just for a few minutes of real game time. Do you practice for 3 or more hours a week for your few minutes of game time?

If you don't like to practice the basic skill of cold reading, you might want to rethink your career choice.  If you don't get really good at it, there is always someone else who will push past you and beat you to the finish line.

When those opportunities finally arise to audition, you don’t want to  feel unpolished.  It is a poor excuse to say you can’t do a good job because you didn’t get many audition opportunities.

Wouldn’t you expect that a backup goalie or relief pitcher that when called upon, would come in and do an excellent job even if they sat out most of the year.  Of course we all would.  Why?

They practice!

Now go find that good book.
