12 Reasons Why Women Should Not Support the BC Liberals

We can do it...by voting! May 17, 2005

1.  The BC Liberals dismantled the Ministry of Women’s Equality (after promising not to).

2.  The BC Liberals eliminated services for women throughout the province, such as Women’s Assault Centres, Sexual Assault Centres, Victim’s Assistance, Women’s Centres, Legal Aid, Poverty Advocacy et cetera.

3.  The BC Liberals slashed income Assistance rates, forcing women into survival sex and the sex trade, and other criminal activities such as the drug trade, fraud, etc., etc., in order to survive.

4.  The BC Liberals abandoned poor women age 55-64.

5.  The BC Liberals forced women to take on unpaid caregiver roles as a result of privatized and unaffordable health services.

6.  The BC Liberals repealed Pay Equity legislation (they support women being paid less for the same work).

7.  The BC Liberals  tore up collective agreements, affecting thousands of families, many headed by women.

8.  The BC Liberals introduced training wage- just another way to underpay women.

9.  The BC Liberals demolished Human Rights protections, including abolishing the BC Human Rights Commission, as well as Employment Standards rights.

10. The BC Liberals violated the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, were the only provincial government ever to be singled out by the U.N. for criticism, and then ignored the recommendations made by the U.N.

11. The BC Liberals instructed Crown Counsel prosecutors to become more “tolerant” of violence against women.

12. The BC Liberals do not care about us, our children, our jobs, our safety  or our communities.
