Health Care Ads Paid for by Women and
Children
BC- The BC Coalition of Women’s Centres is demanding that the
provincial government withhold its television health care
advertisements for one week and use the money saved to continue funding
the province’s Women’s Centres.
Research done by the Opposition Caucus estimates that to date the
provincial government has spent 19 million dollars on their current
Health Care ads- 19 million would fund all 37 Centres for more than 11
years!
It is so frustrating and heartbreaking to think of closing our doors
for lack of money when it costs over $3,000 each and every time a
government ads runs on TV, BC women deserve better” said Dodie Goldney,
coordinator of the Kamloops Women’s Resource Centre.
Is it really a wise way to spend taxpayer’s money?” questions Heidi
Wurmann, coordinator of the Golden Women’s Resource Centre.
“Women’s Centres across the province are busy providing direct
essential services to women at a cost to the province of 1.7 million
per year- a cost that is too prohibitive according to the BC
Liberals. Yet they have no problem spending 19 million on a
single ad campaign which tries to tell the public what a great job
they’re doing running the province.”
The BC Coalition of Women’s Centres is meeting with Minister of State
for Women’s and Senior’s Services, Ida Chong, on Friday March 12th in
Victoria. The Coalition will be asking the Minister to re-instate
funding to BC’s Women’s Centres.
