Legislature Slams the Doors on BC Women
           
BC - The BC Coalition of Women’s Centres is outraged at the lack of democracy at the BC Legislature in Victoria.  The Coalition is demanding that the Liberal Government lift the ban issued to five women from the Coalition who were arrested in March while trying to keep open 37 women’s centres from across the province.  The request to lift the ban was refused late last week.

Charges against the five were never laid.

This lifetime ban represents the BC Liberals utter disregard for the BC Coalition of Women’s Centres, women’s rights and democracy.  Their actions reinforce their contempt towards women and women-serving organizations.  The lifetime ban is extreme and vengeful.

The message delivered to women and social justice advocates in BC is clear: disagree with the BC Liberals, challenge regressive legislation, and you will be jailed and banned.  The decision to ban five women who pose no threats and did nothing criminal is just one more attempt by the BC Liberals to crush any opposition.

The BC Coalition of Women’s Centres vows to fight this ban and continue to work to bring democracy back to the women of British Columbia in the next election.
