Report Card for the Government
of BC
Prevention of Violence Against Women Week,
April 21 - 28
BC—April 21st to 28th is Prevention of Violence Against Women
Week, a provincially proclaimed week. The BC Coalition of Women’s
Centres has responded by grading the current government’s performance
on their commitment, work and support in ending violence against women.
The government has received an “F” for failing in all categories.
The BC Government has failed women.
Of all provinces in Canada, British Columbia has the highest
number of women reporting at least one incidence of physical or sexual
violence, after reaching age 16, at 59%. Today BC women continue
to be assaulted, abused, oppressed, isolated, maligned, maimed, disfigured
and murdered at alarming rates. Between 1993 and 1998, the total
number of reported spousal assaults incidents fluctuated from a low
of 9, 200 in 1993 to a high of 10, 000 in 1997 in this province.
Now more than ever, Government must provide resources, support
and commitment to services and programs for women if there is any
hope for change. Now more than ever, we need Government to provide
income security for women, so that they may leave abusive relationships.
Now more than ever, the Government of BC must end its anti-women agenda.
The BC Coalition of Women’s Centres urges all British Columbians
to grade this government on it’s record of preventing violence against
women. Report cards can be filled out online at our website
(www.bcwomen.cjb.net). Report cards can also be accessed by contacting
community women's centres. We will be collecting the filled out
cards until May 8th. The Coalition will present them
to government at a later date. We encourage everyone who is concerned
about women and children’s safety in this province to fill one out.
