It must be Magrath Days again! I usually don’t make plans to come through town on that weekend. I guess the last time I went through – it was our 10 year for the ’91 Grads, which means it won’t be long before I am at Dave’s 20 year status. Yikes – so that means that I will have to make an effort to come this year and make fun of Dave riding the 20 year reunion float! I am heading back from visiting my grandparents in Saskatchewan earlier that week, and since I have some time off, I think I may just head down and eat hot dogs, and hang out a bit more in Magrath? watch the parade with a flask in my cargo shorts, throw some water balloons at the parade, chew on some candy??

Here is the question: What is going on? I know Dave’s got the reunion gig, but what are the details of that? Friday night? Saturday night? Where is the party, dudes? Where is Waldo?

And a note on being pleasantly reminiscent: There are only a few people, most of them on this blog, who still refer to me as amos. I love the nickname, and I like that just a few core people in my life still call me that. It was a nick name given to me by Kent Saxton, If I remember correctly, from his south american influenced mission. I consider it to be one of two of my sacred nicknames – and that makes me smile! Does anyone want to join me in the memory of cruising around in a car with Kent and playing the Ramones “I wanna be sedated”?

Facebook?

I was barely keeping up to the blog scene, and I had refused to sign up to “instant messenger.” I really wasn’t even replying to email on a consistent or timely basis, and now this. What is this “facebook”? Anyway, once I found out my mom had already signed up, and got hassled enough (actually, I guess they were invites, so really quite nice of those folks), I finally looked into it – and signed myself up. I used my newly adapted version of my name Amelie – to appease one of my new expanded multiple personalities, “the traveling, drinking café, French girl” and put up some pics, and now I have to sit and wait to see my pseudo personality and I have any friends – a daily self-loathing and test of my self-confidence (at least my mom loves me). Good times. Anyway, I am slowly building up my list of friends, and hope to see you all on there soon, since everyone on this pleasantly reminiscent blog seems to have jumped ship (not that I could say I ever contributed much)? The speaker by the way, was Fraser Tuff, and I thought it was excellent. He spoke to the kids, (which was great) and used some humour, some bluntness, and a very awesome photo, to engage them.

He started off by putting a photo up of him in High School...super long hair, a stash, well basically he looked like a banger. He said that he didn't care about school and that his marks were less than exceptional. Then he says that his point of all that was that if they would choose "that guy" (referring to the photo) to come back and speak, then things were looking good for the rest of them. He compared himself to some of the great grad speakers we have had in the past...Burns Alston and Hayley Wickenheiser, and how he really didn't fit that caliber. He was "keeping it real". He offered some good advice, and actually ended up taking the mic out and turning to face the graduates. It was very good, and short & sweet.

I guess people are used to the long, boring speakers that tell the kids to do a,b, & c, in order to suceed. He told them that sometimes things are crappy, and to tough it out. He also told them to do something they love, and if they don't love what they are doing...try something else.

Anyways, it just made me laugh at all the people that were so disgusted with it. Bloody typical!

Sport-Os at MIT?? After talking to a couple of friends of mine they thought it would be interesting to see what it was like growing up in small Mormon comminuties. I have started writing it. It will certainly be interesting, considering where I am coming from now.

It'll probably take a couple of weekends to shoot. Just thinking about it now though has the memories flooding back. Many good times in your fair township. Me, Paul Ferg (who is now a criminal justice lawyer in Vancouver - oh the irony), Jared, Jeramy (corporate whore), Dar (I still credit for getting me into cool music), Scott (who went all country at BYU), Jeff (stole my Cardston girlfriend one summer), Natasha (we never did kiss), Con and Jon (preppy shorts in the winter anyone?), Carter (Tinker's Dam), Rick (I coveted your yamaha DX7), Dawna (alternate name spelling - drama), Randy the male slut, Tracy, Angie, Shea (I remember watching Life of Brian at your house once), Monty, Nicki (we never kissed either and after all the trouble I went to on that island date at Henderson Lake)...I know I'm forgetting a ton of people.

Skating, Depeche Mode, mosh pitting and doing the dead fish at school dances, pretending to be punk rock watching Suburbia. Good times all around. I think I miss the innocence of youth on a daily basis (he says to himself as he peers out his window and feels the air conditioning provided by his corporate job - yes I too am a corporate whore). I'm not sure how many of you are still out there but thank you for adopting some Lethrbidge LCI rejects into your fold back in the 88-89 era. It meant a lot.

- Jason Gough (who defies his American co-workers by dressing up a Captain Canuck every now and then but mainly on July 4th)
