COMMERCIAL BANK OF CANADA
Commercial Bank of Canada (1833) Failed in 1867 One of the three largest banks in Canada. A victim of real-estate speculation of 1850's followed by the depression of 1857-58. (See Bank of Upper Canada) The Commercial Bank was in much better shape then the Bank of Upper Canada and given time the liabilities could be paid in full. In 1868 the Merchants Bank of Canada took over the assets giving the shareholders one share for three. [ Back]
