Manuscript Cancels

Dated 24 April 1866 and signed Guy & Macintyre

The Bill Stamp Act stated that the stamps had to be cancelled across their face by the signature

(or initials) of the instrument's creator or recipient so that each stamp could be clearly associated

with the instrument to which it was attached. The stamps were usually cancelled with initials

and/or the date. After October 1st, 1865 banks and clearing houses were allowed

to cancel the stamps with a rubber hand stamp.
